Errors are sometimes reported by game developers or publishers as a sign of an error in the software and/or hardware of the system used to play the game. In this chapter we explain how error codes are stored and how they are decoded, and we cover the most common error codes that may occur during game play. We also give links to external sources. There are error codes that may occur on computers as well as cell phones, digital video recorders, game consoles, personal computers and hand-held devices, but we will focus on computer-based solutions for this book.
As above, the error codes are used by game developers to indicate how much load the hardware is able to handle. Some of these codes may indicate an error in the game code itself, such as a crash or a game over. Other codes are used for error checking and may indicate other problems, such as having found a bug in the software.
Some error codes are more common than others, and we will cover some of the more common ones. But first, let’s look at how error codes are typically stored and what they may be used for. The numbers in the error codes represent values from a table which may be found in the help file. This is also called the help file, error-code list, or the help-file.
